Matthew Daily-Hunt was lucky to be taken into the outdoors as a small child and has over 30 years experience before starting Outdoor Horizons. Walking, sailing and climbing mountains from an early age he progressed to rock climbing and winter mountaineering in his 20s. His latest idea of fun is climbing frozen waterfalls in the French Alps.
Matthew worked for seven years as a teacher and senior instructor at Stanley Head Outdoor Education Centre where he introduced many hundreds of young people, and adults, to outdoor activities, as well as teaching environmental sciences
Among other qualifications he holds the MLTE Summer Mountain Leader and Single Pitch Awards and is training as a Mountaineering Instructor. He has been a member of the Mountain Leader Training Association since its first year of operation.
“Thank you very much for a great experience for me and my daughters Naomi and Rosi on the Roaches.”
“It was great to have the chance to climb again and good to feel the old skills coming back.”
“I did enjoy it, and I think it was all run very well.”
“You coped and helped a group of people of varying ages and abilities (no ability whatsoever in my case), to experience and get a good feel for climbing and the enjoyment that can be had, all done in a safe and controlled manner.”
“Dear Matthew,
Just a note to say how appreciative we were of your professionalism and dedication in instructing us through the NNAS (Bronze) Award over the week-end. We really can’t thank you enough for your professional attitude and your attention to detail in enabling us to achieve the NNAS Bronze award. You were exemplary.
We hope to see you next year for the Silver Award.
Best Wishes,
Xia Lin and Stuart Lunn”
A qualified and experienced science teacher, Matthew is an Accredited Practitoner of the Institute for Outdoor Learning (APIOL) and is involved in developing the Institute in the Peak area, having been identified as a suitable mentor to other practitioners.
John Dodd acts as our Technical Advisor and has forgotten more about the outdoors than most of us will ever know. He has held the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate (MIC), the MLTUK highest award, for over 30 years and is still infectiously enthusiastic about getting out.
In a 40 year career in outdoor education John has held many senior positions, most recently as Head of Outdoor Education and Advisor in Stoke-on-Trent. MLTE Mountain Leader and Single Pitch Awards can be arranged in conjunction with John as he is an experienced Course Provider.
Outdoor Horizons may also provide additional leaders from a trusted group of experienced and qualified instructors. All will be personally known and approved by us.

“Hi Matthew,
Thanks so much for the photos, they came this morning and we've shown off to everyone who has visited today ! Yes of course you can use any photos for your website.
Our day with you rockclimbing was the highlight of our holiday. You tailored it perfectly, which wasn't easy considering you had 2 adults, a 10 yr old and a 6 yr old to keep happy. The pace was great, starting with scrambling before climbing for real. Your gentle encouragement and quiet confidence in our ability was contagious and we soon believed we could do it, no problem.
They say you learn alot about yourself when you push your limits - and we certainly did, not only about ourselves but about our kids too, which was an unexpected gift. You were great with them, so patient (we could have done with having you around later in the holiday). They both fought to see who could walk right behind you on the way back down to the car.
We left your number in the visitors book back in our cottage so hopefully you may get some calls.
We are already planning next year - that higher climb we saw on our way out ! Mark's also talking about a day caving. So we'll be in touch, thanks again for giving us one of the best days out together we've ever had (like I said, beats Alton Towers hands down),
Nickie and Mark Hillebrandt."
