Walking
A day out walking is one of nature’s most effective remedies for the stress of modern life, all without prescription. We concentrate our walking activities in the Peak District of Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire. If you want to walk in the mountains of Snowdonia or the Lake District then try our Mountains page.

Walking Photo

At Outdoor Horizons we can plan and lead a walk of any length or difficulty, and can incorporate our local knowledge of nature, history and geography, as well as more personal interests in pub lunches, picnics and teashops.

Some personal favourites include:

Lathkill Dale in the Derbyshire Peak District. Gentle walking through an English Nature Reserve which combines dramatic limestone scenery with lead mining history.

Three Shire Heads. Find the spot where Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire meet. How long will it take you to visit all three counties? A perfect picnic, and swimming, spot in summer.

Mam Tor. Traverse the Shivering Mountain with dramatic views over Kinder Scout. Perhaps you would like to walk over an ancient coral reef? Or you could combine your walk with a visit to a local show cave. We can still be back in Castleton in time for tea and cake.

The Roaches. Home of rock climbing in Staffordshire. Sit on the Princess’s throne, see where the King of the Roaches lived and walk close to the highest village in England. A walk here can easily be combined with some rock climbing or bouldering. After all that you will deserve a cream tea or bacon and egg bap at the local cafe.

Chrome Hill. Traverse this dramatic peak in the Upper Dove Valley. Exhilarating positions and awesome views can be reached by easy paths. Close to Longnor village, setting for TVs ‘Peak Practice’.

The Goyt Valley. This lesser known but beautiful area can offer valley walking in the woods of a ruined country house and ridge walking across Cat’s Tor and Shining Tor, with views over the Cheshire Plain. Alternatively, cross the moor to the famous Cat and Fiddle pub.
